THERAPY SESSIONS

Therapy sessions are subsequent appointments you will schedule after your initial diagnostic assessment. During therapy sessions, we hope to use our relationship to help our clients identify areas of concerns, work collaboratively to create goals and objectives, and use evidence-based practices to influence progress and growth. The frequency of sessions depends on each client and recommendations made by each individual provider. Most therapy sessions are about 1 hour long.

DIAGNOSTIC ASSESSMENTS

A diagnostic assessment is your very first appointment with us where we can gather all of your history, learn about your present concerns, and tell you more about our services and how we might be able to assist you. If we don’t feel like we are a good fit for your needs, we will provide a referral for you including resources that better align with what you are looking for. A diagnostic assessment is also an opportunity for you to feel out if Onward is a good match for you. The strength of the therapeutic relationship influences success in therapy, so we want to make sure you feel connected with your provider from the beginning.

MEDIATION

We have a qualified neutral mediator on staff, who is able to meet with disparate parties to help resolve conflict, promote equality, and come to agreement regarding various issues. Mediation is most commonly sought out in the midst of marital separation/divorce and custody.

EYE MOVEMENT DESENSITIZATION AND REPROCESSING (EMDR)

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) helps the brain heal emotional wounds by neutralizing negative thoughts and feelings that have developed from past traumatic events. As a result, thoughts and feelings are not as likely to flood your mind and disrupt new life experiences. By using bilateral stimulation, EMDR helps your brain reprocess previous traumatic events. This allows your mind to digest the information leading to less distress when recalling those events. Your brain knows what it needs to heal. EMDR sessions require less interactive talking between the therapist and client, and oftentimes the client is briefly updating the clinician on new insights, thoughts, images that come up during the process. Sessions typically last 60 minutes varying in the amount needed to complete the EMDR process, with an average of 8-12 sessions. This therapeutic approach targets a broad spectrum of mental health diagnoses.

ACCELERATED RESOLUTION THERAPY

Accelerated Resolution Therapy, also known as ART, is a form of psychotherapy with roots in existing evidence-based therapies, however shown to achieve benefits much more rapidly (usually within 1-5 sessions). ART is found to assist clients healing from trauma, anxiety, depression, phobias, OCD, PTSD, family issues, poor self-image, relationship issues, grief, stress, and pain management. Clients are in control of the entire ART session, with the clinician guiding the process. The process is very straightforward, using a technique called Voluntary Memory/Image Replacement to change the way in which the negative images are stored in the brain. Importantly, clients do not have to talk about their traumas or difficult life experiences with the clinician to achieve recovery. ART is for anyone who can track hand movements with their eyes for a consistent amount of time and have been used on children as young as 4 years old, sessions are roughly 60 minutes in length, and are covered by insurance.

COUPLE/FAMILY SESSIONS

Like regular psychotherapy sessions, couple and family sessions are subsequent appointments you will schedule after your initial diagnostic assessment with you and your loved ones. These sessions can include both or multiple individuals throughout the entirety of the treatment or sometimes it may be appropriate to break off into individual sessions and come back together as a unit. The frequency of sessions depends on each situation and recommendations made by each individual provider. Most therapy sessions are about 1 hour long. Only one individual’s insurance is needed for these sessions.

“The therapy process has helped me realize potential in myself I never knew I had. The environment is comfortable and welcoming. I look forward to the days I have my appointments. The best decision I’ve made for myself was starting with my therapist at Onward.”
